Trujillo was the dictator of the Dominican Republic, and he had a very terrible personality. She writes about irrelevant things like what shoes she should wear to school, and she is also unaware of Trujillo's cruel acts and writes that she is “so lucky to have him as a president." After Maria Teresa grows more mature, she starts to write about much more relevant topics such as Rafael Trujillo’s acts and about how “suddenly, all the boys I've known with soft hands and easy lives seem like pretty dolls I've outgrown and passed on to Minou” (Minerva’s daughter).Īs well as the four Mirabal sisters, Rafael Trujillo is also an important character in In the Time of the Butterflies. When Maria Teresa first begins to write in her diary, she was unknown of the world in a way. Maria Teresa’s character, as well as Dede’s, is dynamic. Minerva wasn't afraid to go against Trujillo in organizations, slap him at the dance, etc. Minerva was very determined, went after what she believed in, and most importantly she was very confident. Minerva is the third Mirabal sister, and personally Minerva was my favorite character. Dede finds her voice, arranges her sisters’ funeral, raises her sisters’ children, and leaves Jaimito for the business world. However, towards the very end of the novel, after Patria, Minerva, and Maria Teresa pass away, Dede’s character changes. Dede stays home to “help with the books”, because her father counts on her to and she doesn't like disappointing others. In Part One of the novel, the sisters all go to “away school” except for Dede. Dede’s character begins very delightful, and is always very determined to please others. Patria was very different from most kids her age and Padre Ignacio predicted that she might just have “a calling for the religious life manifesting itself early on.” As Patria began to grow older, she began to believe what Padre Ignacio predicted, and that is why she grew into such a religious young lady.ĭede Mirabal is the second oldest sister of the four, and her character throughout the novel is dynamic (it changes). Patria Mirabal Patria Mirabal is the oldest of the sisters, not to mention the most religious. ![]() Not to mention Trujillo, who had a major impact on their lives. The main characters of In the Time of the Butterflies are the Mirabal sisters- Patria, Minerva, Maria Teresa, and “the one who survived” (Dede).
